Car Lease Calculator India 2026: Tax Benefit + Lease vs Buy
Car leasing in India is really two different products wearing the same name — and mixing them up is why most “lease vs buy” advice falls flat. One is the corporate/CTC car lease a salaried employee takes through their employer, which is fundamentally a tax play. The other is a retail lease or subscription you sign up for yourself, which is fundamentally a convenience play. The economics are completely different, so this page handles them separately — with a calculator for each.
The corporate car lease: a salary tax play
Employers like Ayvens (the former ALD Automotive and LeasePlan), ORIX and Mahindra’s Quiklyz run car-lease schemes that sit inside your CTC. The mechanics are the whole point: instead of earning the money, paying up to ~31.2% tax on it, and then buying a car with what is left, the lease rental is deducted from your salary before tax. You are taxed only on a small fixed perquisite for personal use of the car — not on the rental itself.
That perquisite is deliberately modest. Under the 2026 rules, where the employer bears running and maintenance costs it is roughly ₹5,000 a month for a car up to 1.6 litres and ₹7,000 a month above 1.6 litres, plus ₹3,000 a month if a chauffeur is provided — up sharply from the earlier ₹1,800/₹2,400 (plus ₹900). Because that figure is a valuation under Rule 3 rather than a deduction, it survives under both the old and new tax regimes. In a well-structured scheme the package is bigger than just the rental — fuel and maintenance, and even a driver’s salary, can also be paid from pre-tax income, with the driver adding only about ₹3,000 a month to the perquisite. That is where most of the saving actually comes from. Put your own numbers in:
Employer Car Lease — Tax Benefit Calculator
A CTC car lease can bundle the rental, fuel & maintenance, and a driver — all from pre-tax salary. You are taxed only on a small perquisite. Enter your monthly figures:
Car perquisite (personal use, employer bears running costs): about ₹5,000/mo (≤1.6L) or ₹7,000/mo (>1.6L) under the 2026 rules (earlier ₹1,800/₹2,400). A driver adds ₹3,000/mo to the perquisite (earlier ₹900). Fuel & maintenance reimbursement is covered by the car perquisite when the employer bears those costs. Official-use-only cars attract no perquisite. Estimates only; not tax advice — confirm with your employer or a CA.
A real example
Take a ₹15 lakh SUV in the 30% slab (about 31.2% with cess), structured properly: ₹30,000 a month lease rental, ₹15,000 fuel and maintenance, and an ₹18,000 driver — about ₹63,000 a month, or ₹7.56 lakh a year, all from pre-tax salary. Against that you are taxed on a perquisite of just ₹10,000 a month (₹7,000 for the car plus ₹3,000 for the driver), or ₹1.2 lakh a year. Your taxable income falls by roughly ₹6.36 lakh, saving close to ₹1.98 lakh in tax a year — nearly ₹8 lakh over four years — before you even count the low-price buyout at the end. Strip out the fuel and driver and the saving more than halves — which is exactly why those components matter.
The retail lease: paying for convenience
Without a company scheme, a retail lease or subscription — from Quiklyz, Zoomcar or the individual plans at Ayvens and ORIX — is a different animal. There is no tax break. You pay a monthly rental that bundles the car, insurance, maintenance and roadside cover, and you hand it back after three or four years. You are buying a predictable monthly cost and zero ownership hassle. Whether that is worth it is a pure cost question, which the next calculator settles by putting a lease head-to-head with a loan on the same car.

Enter the details once to compare a monthly lease against buying on a loan — including what you own at the end.
Estimates only. Lease uses a standard depreciation-plus-finance method; buy uses a reducing-balance EMI. Actual lease quotes, taxes (GST) and resale values vary. Not financial advice.
The lever that decides it is residual value — what the car is worth at the end. A lease only charges you for the depreciation (price minus residual) plus a finance fee, which is why the monthly is lower. But when you buy, that residual is yours to keep or sell, which quietly offsets your cost. So a retail lease almost always costs more in net terms than buying the same car: you are renting a depreciating asset while the lessor prices in its margin, GST and the risk of a soft resale market. You pay for flexibility, not savings.
The GST changes that moved the maths in 2025–26
The September 2025 GST overhaul matters here. The compensation cess was scrapped and cars were restructured into new slabs: small cars (petrol up to 1200cc or diesel up to 1500cc, under 4 metres) dropped to 18%, while larger cars and SUVs moved to 40%. On the leasing side, a self-drive lease is treated as a “transfer of the right to use” and carries 18% GST; long-term corporate contracts are often billed at 12% with full input credit to the company, while chauffeur-driven plans sit at 5% with limited credit. Most businesses cannot claim input tax credit on cars anyway. The practical takeaway: the GST line is now a real swing factor in any quote — read it before you sign.
So: lease or buy?
Lease through your employer if you are salaried in the 30% bracket, your company offers a scheme, you change cars every three to four years, and you intend to take the end-of-lease buyout. In that specific case the tax saving is real and hard to beat.
Buy if you are self-employed or in a lower slab, have no company scheme, keep your cars for the long haul, or drive high mileage — leases cap your kilometres and charge for wear. Owning is almost always the lower lifetime cost because you keep the asset.
A retail subscription suits only a narrow group: people who want a car for a year or two, cannot be bothered with maintenance and resale, or are trying an EV before committing. For them the premium buys genuine convenience.
The catches nobody puts in the brochure
- Mileage caps and wear charges — exceed the limit or return a scuffed car and the bill lands at the end.
- Rigid contracts — early termination usually carries stiff foreclosure penalties.
- No equity — you own nothing unless you exercise the buyout.
- The buyout price — confirm how it is set (and whether a buyout exists at all) before signing.
- The shrinking tax edge — the 2026 perquisite rise and GST changes have narrowed what was once a clear win.
Common questions
Is a company car lease worth it in 2026?
For salaried employees in the 30% tax bracket with an employer scheme, usually yes — the pre-tax rental and low-cost buyout typically beat buying outright, even after the 2026 perquisite hike. At the 20% slab or below, the tax saving often no longer covers the lessor’s margin and GST, so buying wins.
Does the lease tax benefit work under the new tax regime?
Yes. The taxable perquisite is a valuation under Rule 3 of the Income-tax Rules, not a deduction disallowed under the new regime, so the mechanism works in both regimes. Your actual saving depends on your marginal slab.
Can I lease a car as an individual without a company?
Yes — providers like Quiklyz, Zoomcar and the retail arms of Ayvens and ORIX lease to individuals. But there is no tax benefit on a personal lease, so it competes with buying purely on cost and convenience.
What happens at the end of a lease?
You either return the car (an operating lease) or buy it at a pre-agreed residual/book value, if the scheme allows. Corporate schemes often let employees buy the car cheaply, which is a big part of the overall benefit — confirm the buyout terms up front.
Is leasing cheaper than buying overall?
On monthly cash flow, usually yes. On net lifetime cost, usually no — unless a corporate tax benefit tips the balance — because buying leaves you owning the car’s residual value. Use the calculators above with your own numbers.
How we calculated: the lease figures use a standard depreciation-plus-finance method; the tax figures apply your marginal slab to the rental net of the Rule 3 perquisite; the buy figure uses a reducing-balance EMI. Perquisite values reflect the 2026 rules and GST rates the September 2025 restructure. Lease quotes, taxes, mileage terms and resale values vary by provider and car — treat these as estimates, not tax or financial advice, and confirm specifics with your employer, the lessor or a chartered accountant.
