How we picked
We looked for cards a first-time applicant can realistically get, with no fee or an easily waived fee, and checked each one against its issuer’s October 2026 terms. Approval odds come first, then a fee you can avoid, then rewards on the spends most young earners actually have: online shopping, food delivery, bills and UPI.
The three ways to get your first card
- Salaried with a payslip: apply for an entry-level or lifetime-free card with your salary bank, where approval is easiest.
- Student or no income proof: a card against a fixed deposit (secured card) — no CIBIL history needed. See secured credit cards.
- Add-on card on a parent’s account — convenient, but it doesn’t build your own credit history the way a primary card does.
Rules for the first 12 months
- Pay the full statement balance every month — never only the minimum due.
- Keep usage below 30% of the limit.
- Don’t apply for several cards at once; each application is a hard enquiry.
- Set up auto-debit for the full amount from your savings account.
What happens to your score
With on-time payments, most first-time cardholders reach a CIBIL score of 700–750 within 6–12 months, which opens up better cards and cheaper loans. See what score you need for a card and how cards affect your CIBIL score.

FAQs
Should my first card be lifetime free?
Ideally yes — it lets you keep the card open for years, which lengthens your credit history at no cost.
