Amex Platinum Travel Credit Card Review

American Express · Mid-premium travel · Amex
Our score: 8.2 / 10
Annual fee: ₹5,000 + GST (₹5,900 incl)
Reward rate: 1 MR per ₹50 + milestone bonuses
Lounge: 8 domestic/year (max 2/qtr) + Priority Pass
Forex: 3.5%
Last reviewed: October 2026. Major Sep–Oct 2026 changes: the ₹1.9L milestone was removed, the ₹7L reward changed, domestic lounges became spend-gated and new applications were paused. Amex Platinum Travel remains one of India’s most consistently-valuable mid-premium travel cards thanks to its ₹4L (10,000 MR) and ₹7L (₹20,000 Taj e-gift card) milestones.
TL;DR: Amex Platinum Travel (₹5,000 + GST, not waivable) now has two milestones: 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points at ₹4 lakh a year and a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card at ₹7 lakh. At ₹7 lakh of eligible spend, points and gift card together are worth about ₹32,000 a year (points at ₹0.50), or ₹26,100 after the fee. Below ₹4 lakh the fee outweighs the rewards. Domestic lounges are now 2 a quarter and spend-gated, and new applications are paused in India.
What we like
  • Two milestones: 10,000 bonus MR at ₹4 lakh a year, and a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card at ₹7 lakh
  • Free Priority Pass membership (USD 99 fee waived) — covers 1,300+ international lounges
  • 8 domestic lounge visits/year (max 2/quarter)
  • Membership Rewards points transfer to Taj Epicure, Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore KrisFlyer, BA Avios at competitive ratios
  • 10,000 MR welcome bonus on ₹15K spend within 90 days
  • Occasional Amex promotional offers (not a permanent card feature)
  • Purchase protection + extended warranty
Watch out for
  • Amex acceptance still narrower than Visa/Mastercard in tier-2/3 cities
  • MR points excluded on fuel, utilities, insurance, cash, EMI-at-POS
  • 3.5% forex markup — uncompetitive for international spend
  • Priority Pass gives access but visits use your Amex limit (3 free/year on primary, guest charged USD 32)
  • Fuel convenience fee: 0% under ₹5K at HPCL, 1% for ₹5K+ (only HPCL)

Rewards structure

Base earn: 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹50 (about 1% at ₹0.50 a point through Gold Collection vouchers).

Reward Multiplier (Amex promotional program): Amex periodically runs an accelerated-earn “Reward Multiplier” program offering up to 3× MR (3 pts per ₹50) on select partner brands. The specific partner list and earn rate change over time and this is not a permanent feature of the card itself. Check your Amex app / email for the current Reward Multiplier partner list and offer validity before relying on an accelerated rate.

Exclusions: No MR points earned on fuel, utility bills, insurance premiums, cash transactions, and EMI conversions at point of sale (effective 15 March 2020; merchant-terminal EMI from 3 May 2022). MR points DO earn on EMI via Amex SafeKey and on post-purchase EMI conversions.

MR point non-expiry: Effective 3 May 2022, Membership Rewards Points accrued on Platinum Travel no longer expire as long as the card is active and in good standing. Points are forfeited within 30 days if the card is cancelled (by you or Amex).

MR point redemption options: Gold Collection vouchers (18,000 or 24,000 points) return roughly ₹0.50 a point, and statement credit ₹0.25. Points can also be transferred to airline and hotel partners at ratios that vary by partner; check the current list and ratios on Amex India before transferring.

Welcome benefits & milestones

Welcome bonus: 10,000 Membership Rewards points on spending ₹15,000 within the first 90 days of Cardmembership (applicable on payment of joining fee). Value ≈ ₹10,000 on MR-based travel redemption.

Milestone rewards (per Cardmembership year, 3-tier structure per Amex India — “Travel Vouchers” + “Additional Travel Vouchers”):

  • The earlier ₹1.9 lakh milestone (7,500 bonus MR) was removed in the 2026 revision
  • Spend ₹4 lakh in a Cardmembership year → 10,000 bonus Membership Rewards points
  • Spend ₹7 lakh → ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card (usable at Taj, SeleQtions and Vivanta hotels)

Milestones are cumulative: at ₹7 lakh you get both the 10,000 bonus points and the ₹20,000 Taj gift card. With base points that is about ₹32,000 of value a year at ₹0.50 a point. In year one, the 10,000-point welcome bonus (on ₹15,000 spend in 90 days) adds about ₹5,000.

Key benefits

  • Up to 8 domestic lounge visits a year (2 per quarter), each quarter unlocked by ₹1 lakh of spend in the previous quarter (₹70,000 for Q3 2026)
  • Priority Pass membership free (USD 99 fee waived) — 1,300+ international lounges. Primary gets 3 free visits/year on PP; additional visits at USD 35

  • Extended warranty up to 1 additional year on manufacturer warranty

What it’s worth at your spend

Worked out for a renewal year on the October 2026 terms: 1 Membership Rewards point per ₹50 (none on fuel, insurance, utilities, cash or EMI), 10,000 bonus points at ₹4 lakh a year and a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card at ₹7 lakh. The ₹1.9 lakh milestone has been removed. Points are valued at ₹0.50, roughly what Gold Collection vouchers return; at the ₹0.25 statement-credit rate, every points figure halves. The ₹5,000 + GST fee (₹5,900) is not waivable.

Monthly eligible spendPoints a year (base + ₹4 lakh milestone), at ₹0.50₹7 lakh milestoneAnnual feeNet a year
₹20,833 (₹2.5 lakh a year)5,000 = ₹2,500—−₹5,900About −₹3,400
₹33,333 (₹4 lakh a year)8,000 + 10,000 = 18,000 = ₹9,000—−₹5,900₹3,100 (0.8%)
₹58,333 (₹7 lakh a year)14,000 + 10,000 = 24,000 = ₹12,000₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card−₹5,900₹26,100 (3.7%)

The card only pays off near the ₹7 lakh milestone, and only if you will use a Taj gift card: below ₹4 lakh a year the fee costs more than the points are worth. At ₹4 lakh a year you also clear the ₹1 lakh-a-quarter spend needed for 2 domestic lounge visits a quarter. Amex India has paused new applications, so this applies to existing Cardmembers weighing renewal.

Get it if

You can route about ₹7 lakh a year of eligible spend through it, you stay at Taj properties, and you redeem points through the Gold Collection.

Skip it if

You spend under ₹4 lakh a year on it, much of your spend is fuel, insurance or utilities, or you would not use a Taj gift card. A lower-fee card will return more.

Amex MRCC (₹1,000) (comparison coming soon)

Who the Amex Platinum Travel is for

Amex Platinum Travel suits existing Cardmembers who put ₹4–7 lakh+ a year of eligible spend on it and will use a Taj gift card. At ₹7 lakh the two milestones are worth about ₹25,000 (10,000 bonus points plus the ₹20,000 Taj gift card) on top of base points, against a ₹5,900 fee. Note: Amex cards are issued only in 19 specified cities (Delhi/NCR, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Indore, Coimbatore, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Lucknow, Ludhiana, Nagpur, Nasik, Trivandrum, Mysuru).

Not the right card if: your eligible annual spend is below ₹4 lakh (the fee will exceed the rewards) OR you primarily shop at merchants that don’t accept Amex (tier-2/3 local stores). Amex MRCC at a ₹1,000 fee is better at low spend.

How to apply & how to cancel

Apply: Apply via americanexpress.com/in/credit-cards/platinum-travel → new applications are temporarily paused by Amex India. Income verification via bank statements and salary slips. Final approval 3-5 business days; card delivery 7-10 days. Video-KYC available.

Cancel: Call Amex customer care (1860 500 3300 or 1800 425 5555 toll-free) or request closure via online account. Pay all dues; redeem pending MR before closure (MR points forfeited on closure). Renewal fee non-refundable after 30 days.

Final verdict

Amex Platinum Travel is the best-value mid-premium travel card in India. The milestone structure is genuinely rewarding — ₹7L spend unlocks about ₹32,000 of points and Taj gift card value on a ₹5,900 fee, and spend-gated domestic lounges add to that for heavy spenders. Priority Pass membership is free, but every visit is charged. The Amex acceptance concern is real but has improved significantly. For mid-frequency travellers with ₹4L+ annual spend, this is a must-hold card.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Amex Platinum Travel difference from Platinum Charge?

Platinum Travel (₹5K) is a credit card with pre-set limit and revolving credit. Platinum Charge (₹66K) is a premium charge card with no preset limit but full balance due monthly. Different product tiers entirely.

Are Amex MR points taxable?

No — credit card rewards are not treated as income by CBDT and are non-taxable in India.

What if I cancel before hitting the ₹7L milestone?

Milestone bonuses are credited only after crossing each threshold within the Cardmembership year. Pro-rated bonuses are not given. Plan your spending around the anniversary year.

How does Reward Multiplier 3× work?

Log into americanexpress.com/in, activate Reward Multiplier offer for a specific brand (e.g., Nykaa), shop on that brand within the offer period, earn 3 MR per ₹50 instead of the standard 1 MR per ₹50. Offers rotate.

Is the Taj Stay voucher transferable?

Typically used on the cardholder’s booking only. Must be used within 12 months of issuance. Usable at Taj/Vivanta/SeleQtions properties (not Taj Vivanta tier restrictions).

Does Priority Pass count toward my 8 domestic lounges?

Different entitlements. The 8 domestic lounges are direct Amex benefit (DreamFolks/similar). Priority Pass is separate — mainly for international lounges (3 free visits on primary).

Can I transfer MR to IndiGo 6E Rewards?

No — IndiGo is not an MR transfer partner. Best MR transfer partners are Taj Epicure, Flying Returns (Air India), Marriott Bonvoy, Singapore KrisFlyer, BA Avios.

What are the milestone spend thresholds?

Per Amex India’s current terms (October 2026), the card has two milestones: 10,000 bonus MR at ₹4 lakh annual spend and a ₹20,000 Taj Experiences e-gift card at ₹7 lakh. The earlier ₹1.9 lakh milestone has been removed. Eligible spend is retail, online, international or travel (any MR-earning category). Utilities, fuel, insurance, cash, and EMI-at-POS don’t count toward milestones.

How fast are bonus MR credited?

Typically within 30-45 days of crossing the milestone threshold.

Does Amex Platinum Travel come with insurance?

Purchase protection (90 days), extended warranty (1 year), travel inconvenience (lost baggage, flight delay) on tickets booked with card. No standalone air accident / overseas medical cover unlike Infinia.
