CIBIL Report Errors (2026): The 30-Day Dispute Process, ₹100/Day Compensation, and DPD Decoded
By the CreditSmart editorial team · September 2026
The 30-second version
Credit-report errors are common, fixable, and — since RBI’s compensation framework — compensated: once you raise a dispute, the lender has 21 days and the bureau 9 days (30 total); every day beyond that owes you ₹100/day, credited to your account. RBI took this seriously enough to fine TransUnion CIBIL, CRIF High Mark and Equifax in August 2026 for failing to pay such compensation. You also get one free full report per bureau every year — pull all four, because errors rarely appear on all of them at once.
First, learn to read what’s actually written
| Entry | Meaning | Damage |
|---|---|---|
| DPD 000 / STD | Paid on time / standard | None — this is the goal |
| DPD 030/060/090 | Days past due that month | Rising severity; 90+ is a serious derogatory |
| SUB / DBT / LSS | Sub-standard / doubtful / loss | Heavy — often years of drag |
| “Settled” | You paid less than due and the lender wrote off the rest | Major negative — lenders read it as a default compromise |
| “Written-off” | Lender gave up recovering | Worst tag short of suit-filed |
| “Closed” | Fully repaid and shut | Clean — what every ended loan should say |
The “settled” fix: if you later pay the waived balance, ask the lender for a no-dues certificate and a “settled → closed” update to the bureaus. It’s one of the highest-ROI score repairs available.
The errors worth hunting
- Loans you closed still showing active (the #1 complaint) or wrong outstanding.
- Accounts that aren’t yours — identity mix-ups on common names, or fraud.
- Wrong DPD history — a single stray “030” on a paid month drags scores for years.
- Duplicate reporting of the same loan by lender and its assignee.
- Stale personal data causing merged files (old address/phone matching someone else).
- Hard enquiries you never made — a fraud tell (see hard vs soft enquiries).
The dispute, step by step
- Pull all four reports (one free full report per bureau per year; paid refreshes any time). Note each error with account number and month.
- File the online dispute at the bureau where the error appears (CIBIL → myCIBIL dispute section; similarly for Experian/Equifax/CRIF). Attach proof: closure letter, NOC, statements.
- Parallel-write to the lender (email + grievance portal) — the bureau can only report what the lender confirms, so the 21-day clock on the lender is where most disputes are actually won.
- Day 30: not resolved → you’re owed ₹100/day automatically from whoever caused the delay. Claim it in writing citing RBI’s compensation framework (circular of 26 Oct 2023, effective April 2024); the 2026 penalties on the bureaus show the regulator enforces it.
- Escalate: lender’s nodal officer → RBI Ombudsman (cms.rbi.org.in — covers banks, NBFCs and credit bureaus). Free, online, and disputes with a paper trail resolve fast there.
- Re-verify after 45 days — pull the report again and confirm the correction propagated to the other bureaus too.
Never pay “score-repair agencies”. They file the same free disputes you can, often with fabricated claims that backfire. There is no paid shortcut to remove accurate negatives — only time and clean repayment do that (legitimate score-building guide).

FAQs
The bank says “we’ve updated it” but CIBIL still shows the error.
Corrections flow in monthly reporting cycles; allow ~30–45 days, then dispute at the bureau with the bank’s confirmation attached — that pins the ₹100/day on whoever is sitting on it.
Does raising a dispute lower my score?
No. The disputed field may show “under dispute” temporarily, but filing itself has no score impact.
One bureau fixed it; another still shows the error. Which matters?
All of them — different lenders pull different bureaus. Dispute at each bureau showing the error.
How do I actually receive the ₹100/day?
It must be credited to your bank account by the defaulting institution; claim it in writing with the dispute timeline. Refusal is itself an Ombudsman-ready complaint.
