SBI Card Prime Credit Card Review

SBI Card · Mid-premium · Visa / Mastercard / American Express
Our score: 7.7 / 10
Annual fee: ₹2,999 + GST (waivable at ₹3L)
Reward rate: 10 RP per ₹100 on dining / grocery / dept stores / movies + 2 RP per ₹100 other
Lounge: 8 domestic + 4 international/year
Forex: 3.5%
Last reviewed: October 2026. SBI Card Prime remains a stable mid-premium product. Recent changes: restricted domestic lounge list from 10 Jan 2026; statement-credit redemption only in multiples of 4,000 points, capped at 60,000 points a month, from 1 Apr 2026. The milestone-voucher structure has been consistent — ₹50K quarterly + ₹5L annual spend unlocks cumulative ₹11,000 in vouchers.
TL;DR: SBI Card Prime is SBI’s mid-premium card at ₹2,999 (waivable at ₹3L spend). Strong accelerator on dining, grocery and departmental stores (10 RP per ₹100 = 2.5% effective at ₹0.25/point), plus 8 domestic + 4 international lounge visits per year, a complimentary 1-year Club ITC Silver Tier Membership, and ₹1 lakh fraud-liability cover (air-accident cover discontinued from 15 July 2025). Welcome voucher ₹3,000 + milestone vouchers up to ₹11,000/year offsets the fee entirely for moderate spenders.

  • No SmartBuy-like 10× travel accelerator (SBI doesn’t have that ecosystem)

Accelerated categories (10× earn):

  • Dining / restaurants
  • Grocery stores
  • Departmental stores (MCC 5311)

Note: Movie ticket bookings (PVR / INOX / BookMyShow) are included in SBI Card Prime’s 10× list per the official SBI Card page.

Earn 10 reward points per ₹100 in these categories (10% headline, 2.5% effective at ₹0.25 per point).

Base earn: 2 RP per ₹100 on other retail spends (2% headline, 0.5% effective). Fuel excluded.

Utility bill rewards: 20 RP per ₹100 on utility bill payments set up as standing instructions — capped at the first 3,000 points; beyond that, utility spends earn the base 2 RP per ₹100.

Birthday bonus: 20 RP per ₹100 on birthday-period spends — valid one day before, on, and one day after your birthday. Capped at 2,000 RP per calendar year (≈ ₹500 value at ₹0.25/RP on ₹10,000 of qualifying spend).

Redemption: 1 RP = ₹0.25 for statement credit; 1 RP = ₹0.25-₹0.40 on catalogue items. Not directly transferable to airline miles.

Welcome benefits & milestones

Welcome benefit: e-Gift voucher worth ₹3,000 on payment of joining fee, redeemable at one of — Yatra, Hush Puppies/Bata, Pantaloons, Aditya Birla Fashion or Shoppers Stop (per the SBI Card official list).

Quarterly milestone: Spend ₹50,000 in a calendar quarter → ₹1,000 e-voucher (Pizza Hut / Yatra / BookMyShow selection). If hit all 4 quarters = ₹4,000/year.

Annual milestone: Spend ₹5 lakh in Cardmembership year → ₹7,000 e-voucher (Yatra / Pantaloons / etc.).

Combined maximum: ₹11,000/year in milestone vouchers + ₹3,000 welcome = ₹14,000 in Year 1.

Annual fee waiver: Spend ₹3 lakh in anniversary year → next year’s ₹2,999 fee waived.

What it’s worth at your spend

Worked out for a renewal year on the current terms: 10 points per ₹100 on dining, groceries, departmental stores and movies, 2 points per ₹100 elsewhere, 1 point = ₹0.25. The renewal fee is ₹2,999 + GST (₹3,539), waived at ₹3 lakh a year; the ₹1,000 quarterly voucher needs ₹50,000 in a quarter and the ₹7,000 voucher needs ₹5 lakh in the year. We leave out the utility standing-instruction bonus (20 points per ₹100, up to 3,000 points, worth up to ₹750), which comes on top.

Voucher values count only if you use the brands on offer, so treat them as worth less than face value. Below ₹3 lakh a year the fee wipes out the rewards; in the first year the ₹3,000 welcome voucher roughly offsets the joining fee.

Get it if

You spend ₹25,000+ a month (₹3 lakh a year) with a good share on dining, groceries and departmental stores, and you will use the milestone vouchers.

Skip it if

You spend under ₹3 lakh a year (the fee costs more than you earn), or most of your spend is outside the 10X categories, where the card returns only 0.5%.

Who the SBI Card Prime is for

Families spending ₹30-50K/month on a mix of dining, groceries and department-store shopping. At ₹20K/month in accelerated categories + ₹15K/month other, annual rewards ₹6K + milestone vouchers ₹11K + welcome ₹3K = ₹20K in Year 1 on a ₹3K fee. Strong middle-class family card.

Not the right card if: you spend heavily online (Amazon, Flipkart not in Prime’s accelerator categories). Consider HDFC Regalia Gold (5× on 4 specific online brands) or Amazon Pay ICICI (5% Amazon specifically) instead.

Final verdict

SBI Card Prime is a well-rounded mid-premium card optimised for traditional Indian household spending — restaurants, grocery and departmental stores. At ₹2,999 with ₹14K+ Year 1 benefits, it’s excellent for ₹30K+/month family spenders. Less optimal for online-heavy younger users.
