Citigold to Axis: What Happened to Citi India Customers (2026 Guide)

Quick verdict

Citi exited India consumer banking — its business moved to Axis Bank on 1 March 2023. Citigold and Citi Private Client customers were transitioned into Axis Burgundy / Burgundy Private, and Citi-branded cards were migrated by 15 July 2024. If you were a Citi customer, you’re now an Axis customer.

One of the biggest shifts in Indian premium banking in recent years was Citi’s exit from consumer banking. For affluent Citigold customers, it raised a real question: what happened to my relationship, my cards, and my benefits? Here’s the clear picture in 2026.

What happened, and when

Milestone Detail
Deal completion Citi’s India consumer banking business transferred to Axis Bank, effective 1 March 2023
Scale ~2.4 million customers and ~3,200 employees moved to Axis
Premium segment Citigold / Citi Private Client relationships transitioned into Axis Burgundy / Burgundy Private
Wealth AUM Added roughly ₹947 billion, growing Axis’s Burgundy Private portfolio by ~33%
Card migration Citi-branded credit cards migrated to Axis, completed by 15 July 2024

What it means if you were a Citi customer

Your accounts, deposits and cards are now serviced by Axis Bank. Premium Citigold clients were mapped into Axis Burgundy or Burgundy Private — the equivalent affluent and ultra-affluent tiers — and Citi credit cards were replaced with Axis products during 2023–24. In practice, that means access to Axis’s premium card line-up, including the Atlas, Reserve and the Burgundy Private card, plus Axis’s wealth-management platform.

If you’re a former Citigold customer: confirm which Axis tier you were mapped to (Burgundy vs Burgundy Private), review the card you received in place of your Citi card, and check whether your new benefits and forex terms match your usage — the Axis equivalents differ in structure from the old Citi products.

The bigger picture

The acquisition made Axis a far larger player in affluent banking — which is partly why its Burgundy programme and premium cards (Atlas, Reserve, Burgundy Private) have become so central to the market. For customers weighing premium banking today, Axis Burgundy is now one of the most significant programmes in India, boosted by the Citi wealth book.
