Lounge access is now spend-based on most cards

Through 2025 and 2026 most banks moved domestic lounge access from “free with the card” to “free if you spent enough last quarter”. Examples reported in 2026:

  • Most eligible Axis cards: about ₹50,000 of spend in the previous three months.
  • HDFC Regalia Gold: ₹60,000 in the previous quarter for three domestic visits (from July 2026).
  • IDFC FIRST Wealth and Select: ₹20,000 of monthly spend.
  • Several IndusInd cards: much higher quarterly thresholds from April 2026.

Since April 2026, RuPay Platinum debit cards no longer give lounge access. Always check your card’s current spend condition before relying on it.

Is a lounge card worth it?

A lounge visit is worth about ₹1,000–₹1,500 compared with airport food. If you fly 8 times a year, that is ₹8,000–₹12,000 of value — but only if you meet the spend gate every quarter. If your card spend is below the threshold, a cheaper card plus paying for the occasional lounge visit may work out better.

Tips

  • Carry the physical card; many lounges swipe ₹2 as a verification charge.
  • Spend is counted on settled transactions in the previous period, not on the travel date.
  • Add-on cardholders often share the primary card’s visit quota.

FAQs

Why was my lounge access declined?

Most likely you did not meet the previous quarter’s spend requirement, or the quarterly visit limit is used up.
