HDFC Millennia Credit Card Review

HDFC Bank · Entry-mid cashback co-brand · Visa / Mastercard
Our score: 7.8 / 10
Annual fee: ₹1,000 + GST (waivable at ₹1L)
Reward rate: 5% on 10 partner brands + 1% all other
Lounge: Milestone-based (₹1L/qtr unlocks 1 lounge voucher)
Forex: 3.5%
Last reviewed: October 2026. Aug-Sep 2024 changes: (1) From 1 Sep 2024, wallet loading and Easy EMI no longer earn reward points; education payments via 3rd-party apps attract a separate 1% fee (this is a fee, not a rewards exclusion). (2) From 1 Aug 2024, HDFC charges a ₹50 redemption fee every time you redeem CashPoints for statement credit. (3) Lounge access is now milestone-based (₹1L/quarter unlocks choice of ₹1K voucher OR 1 lounge visit) — not automatic.
TL;DR: HDFC Millennia is a popular ₹1,000 (waivable at ₹1L) cashback card with 5% on 10 major lifestyle/shopping brands and 1% elsewhere. Each rate is capped at 1,000 CashPoints a month, so the most you can earn is ₹2,000 a month (₹1,000 at 5% plus ₹1,000 at 1%). Recent changes restrict wallet/EMI/education and add a ₹50 redemption fee — modest but real devaluations.
What we like
  • 5% cashback on 10 partner brands: Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Cult.fit, Myntra, Tata CLiQ, Sony LIV, BookMyShow
  • 1% cashback on all other retail
  • ₹1,000 annual fee waived on ₹1 lakh annual spend (achievable for most users)
  • Quarterly milestone (₹1L spend) unlocks ₹1,000 voucher OR 1 domestic lounge visit
  • Low ₹35K/month income requirement — accessible
  • Fuel surcharge waiver up to ₹250/month
  • EMI and Smart EMI options widely available
Watch out for
  • From Sep 2024: Wallet load and Easy EMI earn ZERO cashback. Education paid via third-party apps earns nothing and attracts a 1% fee; direct payments to the institution earn 1%.
  • From Aug 2024: ₹50 redemption fee per CashPoints-to-statement-credit redemption
  • Cap of 1,000 CashPoints per category per month (1,000 at 5% = ₹20K of accelerated spend/month max)
  • Age cap: 21-40 years (salaried) — older applicants may not qualify
  • Lounge access no longer automatic — tied to ₹1L quarterly milestone
  • 3.5% forex markup
  • 1% transaction fees (per-txn thresholds, since Aug 2024): Fuel over ₹15,000/txn, Utility over ₹50,000/txn, Rent via wallet apps (CRED/PayTM/MobiKwik/Freecharge etc), and Education via 3rd-party apps — each attracts 1% fee on entire amount, capped ₹3,000/txn. Insurance NOT treated as utility (no charge).
  • SmartEMI & Dial-An-EMI do NOT count toward the ₹1L/quarter milestone — only retail spend counts.
  • Gift cards / prepaid loads / wallet purchases (MCC 6540) earn only 1% even when bought at a 10 partner merchant.

5% cashback on 10 partner brands: Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Cult.fit, Tata CLiQ, Sony LIV, BookMyShow. Earn as CashPoints.

1% cashback on all other retail spends.

Capping (important): Maximum 1,000 CashPoints per category per month. 5% earn caps at ₹20K spend (1000 CP = ₹1,000 cashback); 1% earn caps at ₹100K spend (1000 CP) per month. Heavy users hit caps quickly.

Excluded from rewards: Fuel, Easy EMI, wallet loads, rent payments, government/tax transactions. (Education earns normal 1% rewards, but payments via 3rd-party apps attract a separate 1% fee — see Watch out for. Insurance earns normal 1%.)

Redemption: 1 CashPoint = ₹1 as statement credit (₹50 redemption fee per txn since Aug 2024); 1 CP = ₹0.30 on SmartBuy flight/hotel; 1 CP = ₹0.35 on catalogue products.

Welcome benefits & milestones

Welcome benefits: 1,000 CashPoints (₹1,000 value) on payment of joining fee (spend ₹1,000 in first 90 days). Equivalent to full fee return.

Quarterly milestone (₹1 lakh spend per calendar quarter):

  • Choose ONE: ₹1,000 gift voucher (SmartBuy catalogue) OR 1 complimentary domestic airport lounge visit
  • Max 4 quarterly rewards per year (if hit every quarter) — either ₹4K vouchers or 4 lounges

Annual fee waiver: Spend ₹1 lakh in anniversary year → next year’s ₹1,000 fee waived.

What it’s worth at your spend

Worked out on the October 2026 terms: 5% on the 10 partner brands and 1% on other eligible spends, each capped at 1,000 CashPoints a month, with 1 CashPoint = ₹1 as statement credit. All three profiles cross ₹1 lakh a year, so the ₹1,000 fee is waived from the second year.

Monthly spendCashPoints a monthValue a yearEffective rate
Light: ₹15,000 (₹5,000 partner + ₹10,000 other)250 + 100 = 350 CP₹4,2002.3%
Moderate: ₹35,000 (₹15,000 partner + ₹20,000 other)750 + 200 = 950 CP₹11,4002.7%
Heavy: ₹70,000 (₹30,000 partner + ₹40,000 other)1,000 (capped) + 400 = 1,400 CP₹16,8002.0%

The moderate and heavy profiles also cross ₹1 lakh in a quarter, which adds a ₹1,000 voucher or one lounge visit each quarter (up to ₹4,000 a year if you hit every quarter). Redeem in larger amounts: the ₹50 fee per redemption takes 5% off a ₹1,000 redemption but only 1% off ₹5,000. The ceiling is ₹2,000 a month (1,000 CP at 5% plus 1,000 CP at 1%), or ₹24,000 a year.

Get it if

You put ₹5,000–₹20,000 a month on Amazon, Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber and the other partner brands, you are 21–40, and you can reach ₹1 lakh a year so the fee is waived.

Skip it if

Most of your spend is rent, wallet loads, EMIs or fuel (these earn nothing), you are over 40 (outside the age band), or your partner spend is well above ₹20,000 a month, since anything over the cap earns nothing extra.

Key benefits

  • Lounge access: Milestone-based only — ₹1L quarterly spend unlocks 1 lounge visit (as alternative to ₹1K voucher)

  • 25% off at select partner restaurants via Good Food Trail (where applicable)
  • Free add-on cards for family
  • Smart EMI conversion for spends ₹10,000+

Compared with alternatives

HDFC Regalia Gold (₹2,500) →

Higher fee, 12 auto lounges, Swiggy One + MMT Black bundled. Step up if you want automatic travel perks.

HDFC Swiggy (₹500) →

Half the fee. 10% on Swiggy (vs Millennia 5%). Pick Swiggy if food-delivery-heavy; Millennia for broader partner coverage.

Flipkart Axis (₹500) →

Cheaper fee, 5% on Flipkart + 4% on Preferred Merchants. Pick based on Flipkart vs Millennia’s 10 partners.

Axis ACE (₹499) →

Who the HDFC Millennia is for

Young professionals (21-40) spending ₹40-80K/month with heavy online shopping/food delivery/cab usage across Millennia’s 10 partner brands. With both caps at 1,000 CashPoints a month and 1 CP = ₹1, the maximum is ₹12,000 a year from partner brands plus ₹12,000 from other spends: ₹24,000 a year on a ₹1,000 fee.

Not the right card if: you’re over 40 (won’t qualify under HDFC’s Millennia age cap) OR you primarily spend on wallet loads, rent or EMIs (these earn nothing). Consider Regalia Gold for age 40+, or Axis ACE for utility-heavy.

How to apply & how to cancel

Final verdict

HDFC Millennia remains one of India’s most popular entry-mid cashback cards for its target young-professional audience. The 5% on 10 partner brands is genuinely broad, and the ₹1L fee waiver threshold is easy to hit. The 2024 capping and redemption-fee changes hurt optimizers but don’t fundamentally undermine the card’s value for typical users.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the age cap 21-40?

HDFC specifically positions Millennia as a “young professional” card — the 21-40 salaried age cap reflects this. Self-employed applicants may have slightly more flexibility; confirm with HDFC.

What changed in Sep 2024?

From 1 September 2024: Wallet loading (Paytm/PhonePe/Mobikwik), Easy EMI conversions, and education fee payments no longer earn any reward points on Millennia.

What is the ₹50 redemption fee?

From 1 August 2024: Each time you redeem CashPoints for statement credit, HDFC charges ₹50. Redeeming via SmartBuy catalogue or products is exempt. This effectively devalues frequent small redemptions.

Which brands are in the 5% list?

Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, Cult.fit, Tata CLiQ, Sony LIV, BookMyShow. Must be via the merchant’s app/website — in-store Myntra doesn’t count.

Can I combine 5% with Flipkart Plus or Amazon Prime?

Yes — card cashback stacks with merchant programmes. E.g., Flipkart Plus + Millennia 5% earns both.

How does the quarterly milestone work?

Calendar quarters (Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, etc.). Spend ₹1 lakh in a quarter → unlock ONE of: ₹1,000 SmartBuy voucher OR 1 domestic lounge visit. Choose at quarter-end notification.

Is Millennia available as LTF?

Not officially LTF. But paying ₹1L annually in spend waives next year’s fee — effectively free for active users.

Does Millennia earn on Amazon Prime subscription?

Yes — Amazon Prime annual subscription purchased via Amazon earns the 5% (subject to monthly CashPoints cap).

Data current as of October 2026. Credit card fees, rewards and benefits are revised periodically by issuers. Always confirm current terms with the issuer before applying.
