Mutual Fund Calculator

Three modes in one tool. SIP (with optional step-up), Lumpsum (one-time investment), or Solve for Goal (target amount → required SIP).

Methodology. SIP: M = P × [((1+i)^n – 1)/i] × (1+i). With step-up, each year’s SIP = P × (1+step)^y. Lumpsum: FV = P × (1+r)^t. Goal: FG = Goal × (1+inflation)^t, then solve SIP needed. Actual mutual fund returns vary by scheme and expense ratio (0.5–2% drag). Equity LTCG above ₹1.25L/year at 12.5%. Plan with 10–12% for realistic long-term equity MFs.

How the three modes work

SIP projects regular monthly investments using compound growth: FV = P × ((1+r)n − 1) ÷ r × (1+r), where r is the monthly return and n the number of months. Step-up SIP raises the SIP by a fixed percentage every year. Lumpsum grows a single amount: FV = P × (1+R)years. Goal mode runs the SIP formula in reverse to tell you the monthly amount needed for a target.

Worked examples (12% assumed annual return)

ScenarioInvestedValue after 15 years
SIP of ₹10,000 a month₹18 lakh≈ ₹50.5 lakh
SIP of ₹10,000 with 10% annual step-up≈ ₹38.1 lakh≈ ₹86.8 lakh
Lumpsum of ₹5 lakh₹5 lakh≈ ₹27.4 lakh
Goal: ₹1 crore in 15 yearsSIP needed ≈ ₹19,800 a month

The step-up row is the most useful lesson here: raising your SIP in line with salary hikes nearly doubles the outcome without feeling like a big sacrifice in any single year.

Choosing a sensible return assumption

  • Large-cap or index equity funds: 10–12% over long periods, with sharp falls along the way.
  • Hybrid funds: 8–10%.
  • Debt funds: 6–7.5%.

Returns are never guaranteed. Running the calculator at 9% as well as 12% gives you a realistic range rather than a single hopeful number.

Tax on the final value

Equity fund gains held over 12 months are long-term and taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh a year; gains within 12 months are taxed at 20%. Debt fund units bought after 1 April 2023 are taxed at your slab rate. Details are in our capital gains tax guide.

FAQs

SIP or lumpsum — which is better?

A lumpsum usually wins when markets rise steadily, while a SIP reduces timing risk and suits monthly salaries. Our SIP vs lumpsum guide compares both.

Does the calculator include expense ratios?

Enter a return net of costs. Direct plans cost roughly 0.5–1% a year less than regular plans; see direct vs regular funds.

Can I stop a SIP anytime?

Yes. Open-ended fund SIPs can be paused or stopped without penalty; only ELSS units have a 3-year lock-in.
