How we picked
We checked each RuPay card reviewed on CreditSmart against its issuer’s October 2026 terms, dropped cards that are no longer issued or whose availability we could not confirm, and ranked the rest on what you actually earn when paying by UPI QR at a shop, after caps, plus the fee you need to clear.
How RuPay credit cards on UPI work
A RuPay credit card can be linked to UPI apps and used to pay any merchant QR code — the money comes from your card’s credit limit, not your bank account. Only RuPay credit cards can be used on UPI; Visa and Mastercard cards cannot. Person-to-person transfers are not allowed.
Rewards and fees in 2026
- NPCI’s 2024 rule requires that rewards on RuPay credit card UPI spends are not lower than on regular card swipes, except on low-value payments where the issuer earns no interchange.
- From 15 October 2026, merchants pay a 0.4% fee (capped at ₹300) on select UPI merchant payments above ₹2,000 under NPCI’s September 2026 circular. Customers are not charged; payments of ₹2,000 or less carry no fee.
- Issuers still exclude categories such as rent, fuel, wallet loads and government payments — check the card’s terms.
Worked example
Paying ₹15,000 a month at small shops by UPI on a card earning 1% gives about ₹1,800 a year — rewards you would not get paying from your bank account — plus up to 50 days of interest-free credit. Paying in full each month is essential: card interest at 36–45% a year applies to UPI spends too.
