Reward structure — how UPI cashback works

The card earns CashPoints which are credited as a percentage of spend. CashPoints can be redeemed against statement credit at ₹0.25 per point (so the headline numbers below are net cashback after redemption value).

Spend Category (via UPI or card swipe)CashPoints earnEffective Cashback
Grocery, supermarket, departmental stores3% as CashPoints3.0%
Dining, food delivery, online food orders3% as CashPoints3.0%
Utility bill payments (electricity, water, gas)3% as CashPoints3.0%
All other UPI / online / offline spend2% as CashPoints2.0%
Rent payments, fuel, EMI conversion, wallet load0% (excluded)0%
Total monthly cashback cap₹500≈₹16,667 in 3% category spend
Caps trigger fast. Each category caps at 500 CashPoints/month: 3% category caps at ₹16,667 of qualifying spend (3 CP × 16,667/100 = 500 CP); 2% utility caps at ₹25,000; 1% other caps at ₹50,000. Heavy spenders hit caps in the first 2 weeks. Hard ceiling: ~₹375 effective cashback/month across all 3 categories combined (1,500 CP × ₹0.25/CP).

The UPI-on-credit advantage explained

This is HDFC’s response to ICICI, SBI and Axis launching their RuPay UPI-linked credit cards. Linking the HDFC UPI RuPay card to your favourite UPI app (BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, Amazon Pay) lets you pay any merchant by scanning a QR — and the transaction settles on credit, earning rewards, with the bill due on your next statement.

What’s effectively new:

  • Pay your local kirana, vegetable vendor, autorickshaw, or restaurant by QR scan and earn 2–3% cashback (categorised by merchant code)
  • Get up to 50 days of interest-free credit on transactions that previously came straight out of your bank balance
  • Track all spending in a single statement instead of scattered UPI transaction logs
  • No more fumbling with the physical card — phone-based payment for credit purchases

Welcome benefit

Per HDFC UPI RuPay Credit Card T&C (effective 27 Mar 2025): CashPoints earn structure is 3 CP per ₹100 on Grocery/Supermarket (MCC 5411), Dining (MCC 5812/5814) and PayZapp; 2 CP per ₹100 on Utility (MCC 4900); 1 CP per ₹100 on other eligible categories. Each category capped at 500 CashPoints per calendar month. Redemption rate: 1 CashPoint = ₹0.25 (statement credit / SmartBuy / catalogue). So effective cashback is ~0.75% on grocery/dining/PayZapp, ~0.5% on utility, ~0.25% on other — capped at ₹125 cashback per category per month. Joining fee waiver in second year on ₹25,000 retail spend in previous year (excludes EMI, cash, fees).

Where this card falls short

₹500/month cashback cap is restrictive — heavy spenders cap out within the first 2 weeks of the month and earn 0% on remaining spend.
Rent, fuel, wallet load are excluded from rewards. The exclusion list is broader than most cashback cards — check before you make a payment.
3.5% forex markup makes this card useless for international UPI / international spend.
No lounge access, no insurance, no concierge — strictly a transactional cashback card.

Tata Neu Infinity HDFC RuPay5% on Tata Neu, 1.5% other₹1,499Tata ecosystem buyers

The HDFC UPI RuPay is the cheapest entry point to UPI-on-credit. For raw value per rupee of fee, nothing beats it. Step up to the Tata Neu Infinity HDFC RuPay only if you’re a heavy Tata Neu / BigBasket / Croma buyer.

Bottom line — should you get it?

The HDFC UPI RuPay Credit Card is a no-brainer for any HDFC customer who currently pays grocery, dining and utility bills via UPI from a savings account. At ₹99/year, even modest monthly UPI spend of ₹5,000–₹10,000 across these categories returns positive value within the first month — and the fee waiver kicks in at just ₹25,000 annual spend, which most active users hit in 2–3 months.

Skip it if (a) you spend more than ₹17,000/month in cashback-eligible categories — the ₹500 monthly cap means anything above that earns 0%; the Axis ACE (5% on utilities, no monthly cap on first ₹500) or Amazon Pay ICICI (5% on Amazon, no cap) deliver more, (b) you primarily spend on rent / fuel / EMIs which are excluded categories, or (c) you’re not on RuPay-compatible UPI infrastructure — most older feature phones and some legacy QR systems still don’t accept RuPay credit.

Verdict 8.0 / 10

A nearly free entry-tier UPI cashback card from a top-tier issuer. The annual fee is so low that even capped monthly cashback delivers a payback period of weeks, not months. Ideal as a UPI primary card paired with a higher-cap secondary card for big-ticket spend.
