Gold Loan in India: LTV, Interest, Risks & How It Works
Last verified: October 2026, against the RBI (Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral) Directions, 2025 and standard lending practice. Rates, LTV and terms vary by lender and change — confirm current terms before borrowing. General information, not financial advice.
A gold loan lets you borrow against your gold jewellery or coins — fast, with minimal paperwork and no income proof for smaller loans. It’s one of the quickest ways to raise short-term cash, but the gold is at stake if you default.
How a gold loan works
You pledge gold with a lender; they value it and lend a percentage of its worth. You pay interest (and principal) and get the gold back on full repayment. Because it’s secured, approval is fast and a credit score/income proof is usually not required.
How much you can borrow (LTV)
Under RBI’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025 (in force from 1 April 2026), the loan-to-value cap is tiered by loan size:
- Loans up to ₹2.5 lakh: up to 85% of the gold’s value (₹1 lakh of gold → up to ₹85,000)
- ₹2.5 lakh – ₹5 lakh: up to 80%
- Above ₹5 lakh: up to 75%
For bullet-repayment loans, LTV is computed on the total amount repayable at maturity (principal + interest), so the cash you receive upfront is lower. Only the gold content counts — not gemstones or making charges — and lenders value it at the lower of the previous day’s price and the 30-day average.
Interest and tenure
Rates typically range roughly 9%–18% a year depending on lender and LTV; tenures are short (a few months to a few years). Repayment options vary: regular EMIs, or a bullet repayment of principal and interest — which, since April 2026, must be completed within 12 months.
What changed in 2026
- No credit appraisal or income proof for gold loans up to ₹2.5 lakh (KYC still applies); larger loans need a repayment-capacity check.
- Bullet-repayment gold loans must be repaid (principal + interest) within 12 months. The old practice of paying only the interest and rolling the loan over is curtailed.
- Auctions: the reserve price must be at least 90% of market value, dropping to 85% if two auctions fail, and borrowers must be notified in advance.
- Lenders cannot lend to buy gold — jewellery, coins, gold ETFs or gold mutual funds.
- Pledged gold must be returned within 7 working days of full repayment, with compensation for delays.
Pros and cons
- Pros: fast disbursal, minimal documents, no income proof, lower rate than an unsecured loan.
- Cons: your gold is pledged and can be auctioned if you default; short tenure; over-borrowing risk.
Use it wisely
Gold loans suit genuine short-term needs you can repay soon. Borrow only from RBI-regulated banks/NBFCs (avoid informal lenders), check the purity valuation and all charges, and never borrow more than you can comfortably repay. Gold loan vs personal loan
Side-by-side
| Gold loan | Personal loan | |
|---|---|---|
| Security | Secured (gold pledged) | Unsecured (no collateral) |
| Interest rate | Lower (≈9–18%) | Higher (≈11–24%) |
| Credit score | Usually not required | Important — affects approval & rate |
| Income proof | Often not needed | Required |
| Disbursal | Very fast (same day) | Fast, but more checks |
| Risk | Gold auctioned if you default | No asset lost, but score & legal action |
| Tenure | Short | Up to ~5–7 years |
When a gold loan wins
You have gold, want the lowest rate and fastest cash, have weak/no credit history or no income proof, and can repay relatively soon.
When a personal loan wins
You don’t want to pledge gold, need a longer tenure and fixed EMIs, and have a solid credit score to get a good rate. Tips to get the best rate: lowest personal loan rate.
FAQs
How much can I borrow against gold?
Up to 85% of the gold’s value for loans up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% for ₹2.5–5 lakh and 75% above ₹5 lakh (RBI rules from 1 April 2026).
Can I keep renewing a gold loan by paying only interest?
Not indefinitely. Bullet-repayment gold loans must now be repaid in full within 12 months; renewal is allowed only under the lender’s conditions after dues are cleared.
Do I need a credit score for a gold loan?
Usually not — it’s secured by gold, so income proof and credit score are generally not required.
What happens if I don’t repay?
The lender can auction your pledged gold to recover the dues, so repay on time.
