Net Banking: How to Set It Up & Stay Safe

Last verified: June 2026, against RBI/NPCI rules and official procedures. Charges, limits and processes can vary by bank and change over time — confirm with your bank. General information, not financial advice.

Net banking lets you transfer money, pay bills and manage your account online — but it’s also a target for fraud. Here is how to set it up and, just as important, how to keep it safe.

How to set up net banking

  1. Get your customer ID/user ID (on your passbook/welcome kit) or self-register on the bank’s website.
  2. Choose “new user / register” and verify with your account number, registered mobile (OTP) and debit-card details.
  3. Set a strong login password and a separate transaction password.
  4. Enable transaction alerts and, where offered, an additional 2-factor login.

The safety rules that actually matter

  • Never share your OTP, passwords, CVV, card PIN or UPI PIN — no bank or “official” will ever ask for them.
  • Type the bank URL yourself or use the official app; never log in via links in SMS/email/WhatsApp.
  • Check for https and the correct domain before entering credentials.
  • Avoid net banking on public Wi-Fi or shared computers.
  • Keep your mobile number updated so you get alerts, and review statements regularly.
  • Set up transaction limits and turn off features you don’t use.

If something goes wrong

Report unauthorised transactions to your bank immediately — under RBI rules, prompt reporting limits your liability. Block the account/card via the bank’s helpline or app. See our guide on handling fraud and liability.

FAQs

How do I register for net banking?

Self-register on your bank’s website using your account number, registered mobile (OTP) and debit-card details, then set login and transaction passwords.

Will my bank ever ask for my OTP or password?

No. Banks never ask for OTP, passwords, CVV or PIN. Anyone who does is a fraudster.

Is net banking safe on public Wi-Fi?

Avoid it — use mobile data or a trusted network, and always the official app/site.
