Our score: 5.5 / 10
₹500 fee
10X at 5 partner brands
₹0.15 per CashPoint
Waived on ₹50,000

The HDFC Freedom is an entry-level card for first-time and younger users. It earns 10 CashPoints per ₹200 at five partner brands and a low base rate elsewhere.

HDFC cut the base rate on 15 May 2026 — it now takes ₹200 rather than ₹150 to earn a CashPoint — and each CashPoint is worth ₹0.15, so the card’s value depends almost entirely on partner spending.

In short: A ₹500 starter card (waived at ₹50,000) earning 10 CashPoints per ₹200 at BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber and 1 per ₹200 elsewhere. At ₹0.15 a point, that is 0.75% at partners and 0.075% elsewhere. Easy to get, but poor value compared with lifetime-free cashback cards.

Redeem against the statement (minimum 3,334 CashPoints), on SmartBuy (up to 50% of a booking) or from the catalogue. CashPoints expire after two years.

Worked example: Spend ₹6,000 a month at the partner brands and ₹10,000 elsewhere. You earn 300 + 50 = 350 CashPoints a month, or 4,200 a year — worth about ₹630 at ₹0.15, before the ₹50 redemption fee. You spend ₹1.92 lakh a year, so the ₹500 fee is waived, but a lifetime-free 1% cashback card would return about ₹1,900 on the same spend.

What earns nothing

Fuel, rent, government payments, wallet loads and EMI spends earn no CashPoints.

Final verdict

An easy entry into credit for new users, but a weak rewards card after the May 2026 cut. Use it to build a credit history, then move to a better card once your score allows.
