Which “Lifetime Free” Credit Cards Are Really Free? (2026 Check)
“Lifetime free” is one of the most loosely used phrases in Indian credit card marketing. Some cards are genuinely free forever; others are free only if you spend a minimum amount, only under a limited-period offer, or only for a particular group of customers. This guide sorts the most commonly cited cards into those groups and shows how to check any card yourself. If you just want the best free card for a purpose, see our ranked list of the best lifetime-free cards.
Three kinds of “free”
| Type | What it means | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Truly lifetime free | No joining fee, no annual fee, no spend condition | Low — though banks can still revise charges with notice |
| Free with a condition | Free only under an offer, for a group, or unless you are inactive | Medium — the offer can end or the condition can bite |
| Fee waived on spend | A fee is charged unless you spend a set amount | Higher — miss the threshold and you pay |

Often called free, but not
| Card | Actual fee |
|---|---|
| Tata Neu Plus HDFC | ₹499 + GST, waived on ₹1 lakh. The lifetime-free offer applied only to applications in Oct–Dec 2024 |
| Standard Chartered Smart | ₹499 + GST, reversed on ₹1.2 lakh spend |
| HDFC Millennia | ₹1,000 + GST, waived on ₹1 lakh spend |
| RBL ShopRite | ₹500 annual fee, waivable on spend |
| HDFC UPI RuPay | ₹99 + GST, waived on ₹25,000 spend |
| IDBI Imperium Platinum | ₹499 + GST joining and annual, waived on ₹75,000 spend |
Spend-waived cards are not bad — some of them, like HDFC Millennia, earn more than most free cards. Just budget for the fee in a year when your spending drops.
How to check whether a card is really free
- Read the fee table, not the banner. The Most Important Terms and Conditions (MITC) or Key Fact Statement lists joining and annual fees. “Waived on spend of ₹X” means it is not lifetime free.
- Look for “limited period” or “offer”. These can be withdrawn for new applicants, and sometimes at renewal.
- Check inactivity and add-on fees. A card with no annual fee can still charge for inactivity or add-on cards.
- Check who qualifies. Some free cards are only for existing customers, digital applicants or a professional group.
- Keep the welcome letter. If the bank later changes fees, it must give you notice; you can close the card if you do not accept the change.
